The Challenge
As costs continued to rise across the chocolate category and competition intensified, a European chocolate brand was looking for a clearer path to growth in Canada.
The brand had a strong reputation and heritage, but its growth required more than simply increasing awareness. Leadership needed a deeper understanding of the chocolate market and a clearer picture of where future opportunities existed.
There were a number of questions to answer, including:
-
Who should the brand prioritize to drive both customer acquisition and loyalty?
-
How did Canadian consumers think about chocolate, and what factors most influenced their purchasing decisions?
-
How was the brand positioned relative to key competitors, and where could it stand apart?
-
Which claims and messages would resonate most across English- and French-speaking audiences?
-
As category costs increased, how much pricing flexibility existed without compromising demand?
While each question was important on its own, a holistic approach was warranted. The client team needed a connected view of consumers, competitors, positioning, messaging, and pricing to guide decisions with confidence.
The Approach
Phase 5 designed a nationally representative quantitative study among category consumers. Our research explored how consumers choose chocolate, what influences their purchase decisions, and how different segments think about quality, value, indulgence, and brand preference.

We combined multiple analytical approaches into a single study to build a more complete picture for this chocolate brand. To that end, we identified distinct consumer segments based on the factors driving chocolate choice, measured brand performance throughout the purchase funnel, assessed competitive positioning, evaluated claims and messaging, and explored price sensitivity across different consumption occasions.
Rather than viewing these findings in isolation, we connected them to understand how consumer motivations, brand perceptions, messaging preferences, and pricing expectations worked together.
The Insight
The study revealed that not all chocolate consumers think about the category in the same way.
Different segments were motivated by different needs, whether that was indulgence, quality, ingredients, value, or premium experiences. These differences shaped not only what consumers purchased, but also which messages resonated and what they were willing to pay.

Our research also uncovered opportunities to strengthen the brand's position in the crowded chocolate category. By analyzing both brand funnel performance and using the Mental Availability framework, Phase 5 identified areas where the brand could be more distinct while also remaining true to its heritage.
Messaging was equally important, and combining quantitative rankings with open-ended feedback helped uncover not just which claims performed best, but also why.
In addition, our pricing analysis provided a clearer understanding of how consumers viewed value across everyday and premium occasions, helping the team navigate a category facing ongoing cost pressures.

The Impact
The research gave the client’s brand team a clear roadmap for growth in Canada.
Insights helped prioritize the consumer segments with the greatest potential for acquisition and loyalty, refine brand positioning, strengthen messaging, and inform pricing decisions across multiple occasions.
By providing a deeper understanding of how consumers discover, trial, and purchase chocolate, our findings also supported channel and in-store activation planning.
Most importantly, the study brought multiple business questions together into a single strategic direction, giving the brand confidence in where to focus and how to grow in an increasingly competitive market.
Why Phase 5?
Many research partners can answer individual questions. We help clients understand how those answers connect.
For this study, Phase 5 brought together segmentation, brand performance, positioning, messaging evaluation, and pricing analysis into a single strategic framework. Rather than delivering separate findings, we connected consumer motivations, brand perceptions, purchase drivers, and pricing expectations to reveal where the greatest growth opportunities existed.
The result wasn't just more data. It was a clearer understanding of whom to prioritize, how to position the brand, and where to focus future investment.
